Three Facts About Pilates Workouts that Might Surprise You

Pilates is a form of physical conditioning invented by Joseph Pilates to promote body strengthening and rehabilitation. Influenced by yoga, Zen meditation, martial arts, and ancient Greek and Roman exercises, Pilates focuses on simple exercises that activate the core muscles and repeat controlled movements.

Pilates has grown to be a very popular exercise method. Even if you have not taken a Pilates class, you have likely seen the equipment. The equipment (called a reformer) can sometimes seem overwhelming to new patrons.

  1. It’s important to work with a trainer. Because Pilates focuses so much on form, it is wise to work with a professional trainer one-on-one or in a Pilates class. The coach can ensure you are completing the motions correctly. This will help you tone your muscles so that you can see the benefits of Pilates. It will also help you avoid injury from improper form.
  1. Mat Pilates is a good place to start! Though you can jump right in to reformer Pilates workouts if you want, we often encourage newcomers to start with mat Pilates. Working on the mat first can help you learn the proper form for each exercise. This will give you a great foundation when you transition to working on a reformer. Plus, you don’t need any equipment for mat Pilates workouts except a mat. It’s easy to get started.
  1. Pilates is not always enough alone. Though Pilates is an excellent workout that incorporates stretching and strength building, it is not a catch-all program. It is best to combine Pilates with other exercises for maximum effect. You should consider adding cardio to your workout schedule, as well as other strength training, particularly with arm strengthening exercises in mind.
