Reformer Pilates vs. Mat Pilates: What’s the Difference?

There are two different kinds of Pilates: mat Pilates and reformer Pilates. Each type of Pilates is distinct, though they have much in common. Both focus on repeated movements that strengthen your core, encourage a mind-body connection, and promote flexibility.

Of course, the biggest difference between the two types of Pilates is the equipment used in each exercise. Reformer Pilates uses a specialized piece of equipment (the reformer) to supplement movements. The primary function of the reformer is to provide resistance that helps tone muscles. Mat Pilates does not use the reformer. The exercises rely on your body weight to provide the resistance necessary for developing muscle tone, core strength, and the other benefits of Pilates. Sometimes, people assume that mat Pilates must be easier than reformer Pilates, but that’s not necessarily the case. Both provide a different challenge. Mat Pilates can be just as difficult because the resistance comes from your body weight, not just a reformer.
