Pilates workouts are a form of exercise that use low impact movements to improve flexibility, postural alignment, and strengthen muscles. Usually, Pilates workouts take 45 to 60 minutes and are led by an instructor. There are a few different styles of Pilates workouts with some requiring equipment and some not requiring equipment. There are two main types of Pilates: Reformer Pilates and Mat Pilates. It is important to know what type of Pilates workout you are attending so that you can be prepared as best as possible.
- Reformer Pilates – During a reformer Pilates class you will use a machine called a Reformer. It will have pullies, springs, and a sliding platform.
- Mat Pilates – As the name describes, you will use a mat during this Pilates class. The mat is a little thicker than a yoga mat. It is used to cushion your body as you work through different movements on the floor and while standing.
During your Pilates workout you will move from position to position. Sometimes you may use additional equipment like the Wunda. The Wunda is a chair with springs and special padding. Sometimes you may us only your body and no additional equipment. No matter what kind of Pilates workout or what equipment is involved you can expect to feel your muscles burn, to have fun, and you may find yourself a little sore the next day.
