You’ve decided you’d like to try Pilates, and after doing your research, you’ve likely discovered that it focuses a lot on proper technique. For this reason, it’s probably a good idea for you to enroll in an instructor-led class to ensure you’re doing each exercise correctly.
When you’re picking out a class, though, there are a few things you should keep in mind:
- Types of Pilates. There are two main varieties of Pilates: mat and reformer. Essentially, Mat Pilates uses less equipment, while Reformer Pilates uses more. A given Pilates instructor likely has a personal preference for one or the other, so try to choose one who favors the type you’re interested in.
- Pilates classes are available in both one-on-one and small group settings. At Fitness By Design, for example, we offer both. Some people enjoy the company of other learners, while others concentrate best and feel more free to ask questions when alone with their Pilates instructor.
- Learning Style. Everyone learns in different ways, and there’s no exception when it comes to exercise. Some people do best by visually interpreting instructions, others need verbal descriptions, and still others find tactile reinforcement to be most effective. When signing up for a class, try to factor in what you know about how you learn and ask whether any instructors use your favored approach.
For every Pilates student, there is a Pilates instructor. Reach out to our Pilates experts at Fitness By Design, and we can connect you with the right fit today!
